Last night Brad Tuff, organiser of virtual walking event, ‘I Would Walk 5,911 Miles’ met with Jeff Rotmeyer to present the cheque with the money raised for Impact HK through the event. Alongside them, Chairman Roy Kinnear and General Manager Sarah Monaghan presented the Doddie Weir cheque. Read more to find out the grand total…
The challenge took place over the week of October 12-18, with over 200 participants walking distances between 30 and 300 kilometers. Walkers applied from all over the world, including the likes of Canada, China, Ireland, Dubai and the UK, connected by an online logging system which tracked everyone’s distances. The aim was to collectively walk 5,911 miles, the total distance from Hong Kong Scottish’s home pitch (Shek Kip Mei) to Murrayfield, the home of My Name’5 Doddie founder, Doddie Weir. This target was absolutely demolished with the final number achieved – a whopping 7,950 miles.
Each participant collected sponsorship money which was to be split evenly between Impact HK and the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.
Impact HK is a Hong Kong based charity founded by the aforementioned Jeff, which provides the homeless with a connection to friends, society and a safe and comfortable home. They are an incredible organisation who not only support by providing food and resources for those without a home, but actively pursue removing them from these conditions and offer shelter, training and job opportunities.
The My Name’5 Doddie Foundation was founded by Doddie Weir in 2017 after his diagnosis of motor neurone disease. The foundation aims to raise funds for research into the causes of MND and investigate potential cures, and to make grants to sufferers of MND and enable them to live as fulfilled a life as possible.
We are so proud to be associated with both foundations, and that our members and friends so eagerly took on the challenge set by Brad. An impressive $350,000 HKD was raised through the event, and we were delighted to present each charity with $175,000 each last night.
A massive thank you to Brad Tuff for organising the event and to everyone who participated; your efforts are well appreciated and will continue to make a difference in many people’s lives.
