We are thrilled that our Women’s Head Coach, Kei Tam has been announced as Hong Kong Women’s National Skills Coach, so we took a moment to ask him a few questions about his coaching journey so far….
How long have you been coaching for?
I’ve been coaching for 10 years now and I’ve been coaching women’s rugby for seven years!
How and when did you get involved with Hong Kong Scottish?
I was introduced to the club by a good friend (Charles Cheung) in 2015 and started coaching the women’s team, as well as playing front row for the Bravehearts and Phoenixes.
What’s your greatest coaching highlight?
Coaching the HKS Kukris to promotion last season, in particular our final game against USRC Tigers, which we won, taking us into the play offs (which we won too!)
So, how did you get involved in women’s rugby?
I just think it’s a brilliant sport and needs more people championing it. I just wanted to help out a little bit.
What motivates you?
When my team or individual players achieve their goals. That makes me happy.
Who’s your coaching inspiration?
Firstly, Andy Yuen (HKRU) as he really encouraged me to start coaching in the first place and he has really taught me a lot over the years. Also, John Clark (Valley RFC) has always supported and pushed me (as well as a lot of local players) to keep pushing boundaries and he helped me to develop communication style, especially when working with younger players.
What are you looking to learn / gain from your new national coaching role?
I’m really looking forward to learning more about how to create a high performance environment and maximising contact time with players. I’m also looking forward to working with new coaches and players and everything that goes with that.
By day Kei Tam is a digital designer and in the evenings you’ll find him coaching or in the gym pumping iron.
Well done Kei Kei and all the best in your exciting new role!
