OUR CLUB

Over a century ago exiled Scots in London formed London Scottish FC which is widely regarded as one of the greatest success stories in British rugby.

In a similar vein, the HKRU set up a new Premiership team with the support of London Scottish, adopting their badge and sharing their colours (blue, white and red) as a mark of that relationship. This involved a group of exiled Scots engaging with the existing Nomads Rugby Club and building on a relationship with London Scottish and the strong Scottish community in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Scottish was thus formed, and in early April 2011 our club was launched, playing in the world famous Melrose Rugby Sevens – the birthplace of Rugby Sevens. The club entered into the domestic Premiership Division for the 2011/12 season.

Hong Kong Scottish runs four men’s rugby teams and two women’s rugby teams. Our club’s home ground in the Shek Kip Mei area of Hong Kong is affectionately known as ‘The Rock’.

Our club has grown impressively and now boasts more than 600 members (of whom over 300 are playing members). In addition to rugby, the club is represented by our two football teams, four senior netball, two junior netball sides, 3 touch rugby teams, a cricket and a golf section.

Hong Kong Scottish has also developed partnerships with local charities including SoCO, Mind HK, ImpactHK, Changing Young Lives Foundation and now has Section 88 Charity status of their own in the form of the Hong Kong Scottish Foundation. Regular events give players and coaches the opportunity to teach local children from Shek Kip Mei and Sham Shui Po districts about rugby and fitness.

Hong Kong Scottish is proudly sponsored by KPMG, the leading professional firm.

Office Bearers

David A. Bruce

David A. Bruce

Chairman

David served as Chairman of Hong Kong Scottish from 2015-2018, after serving three years as Finance Director.  He developed his rugby skills at the Royal High School, Edinburgh before refining them at Heriots FP, London Scottish, Dhahran and finally Hong Kong Football Club.

A Hong Kong resident since the late 1980s, David is a Scottish Chartered Accountant who combines professional practice with a bit of teaching and a habit of starting businesses.

David served as Finance Director of the Hong Kong Rugby Union from 1992 to 1996 and was also the Finance Director of the first Sevens World Cup held in Hong Kong in 1997.

Arrann Young

Arrann Young

Vice Chairman

Arrann first became involved in the Club in 2018 having been a firm fixture in HK Rugby circles since arriving in Hong Kong in 2006. Originally from Holywood, Northern Ireland – describing himself as a Celt who could swim, Arrann enjoys reminding everyone that the first King of Scotland was actually an Ulsterman – King Fergus Mor!

Following a Sports Science degree and playing representative Rugby League for Ireland Students and for Great Britain Students, a fractured patella put an untimely end to what could have been a glittering career (allegedly). An 11 year stint in the UK as a Headhunter working with companies like Jaguar and Aston Martin set him up for a move to Hong Kong, where shortly after he joined Swire as part of their in-house Leadership Development consultancy. The next 9 years saw him travel extensively throughout the Swire kingdom, before switching to KPMG as Head of Leadership Development in 2015 where he now resides as a Partner looking after the development of key talent.

Arrann contributes a great deal to the pastoral care and wellbeing of our rugby players off the pitch and offers a wealth of support and guidance for those looking to establish their careers in Hong Kong. He is a legend at Spoof but is terrible at Mixies.

Stewart Saunders MBE

Stewart Saunders MBE

President

Stewart was one of the driving forces behind the creation of Hong Kong Scottish and served as its first Chairman from 2012 to 2015, before assuming the role of Club President.  He has a keen interest in player welfare and can often be found in the middle of the end-of-match huddle.

An engineer by background, Stewart has had a long and distinguished career in the power industry heading up MANWEB and Selectusonline.com before taking the role of Chief Operating Officer of CLP, Hong Kong.

Stewart has a wealth of experience in sports club management including stock car racing and ice hockey, as well as rugby.  A native of Kirkcaldy, he also keeps an eye on the Raith Rovers scores.
