Hong Kong take out the series win in Kenya

One Year ago this week the Hong Kong national team squared up against Kenya in Nairobi. What followed was a 34-10 trouncing by the Home Team as Kenya showed why they are so well regarded in the international rugby scene. Skip forward a year and Hong Kong are once again in Kenya, two test matches this time and a chip on their shoulder. During the first game, Hong Kong took an early lead, only to let Kenya back into the game and eventually tie the scores up by the last whistle.  Although it was an improvement on last year, the team still felt it had something to prove. Coming into the second game the HK team looked strong as six Bloomberg Hong Kong Scottish Players were named in the squad: four of those starting. A slower start to this second bout saw a kicking match between the two teams until HKS star Kyle Sullivan score the first try of the game late in the first half.  With a half time score of 16-6 at the half, Hong Kong looked to be in the driver’s seat.  More stellar kicking and two tries by way of the front row from Hong Kong saw them maintain the lead. A touch of Dèjà vu struck the visiting ranks though as Kenya proceeded to put two tries away in quick succession and looked to be mounting a comeback.  A penalty by way of Rosslee for Hong Kong slowed the Kenyan advance but not for long as Kenya ran in another to make the score 36-27. In the end, though Hong Kong proved to be too much as the forwards put one more on the home side. With A final score of 43-34, Hong Kong can hold their heads high as they take out the series win. Congratulations to all players but in particular to those Hong Kong Scottish players who were integral in the win.  For a short video of the tour click here.
