Whiteford to Make HK Debut

On Saturday, HK Scottish GM Dave Whiteford will make his HK debut against UAE at HK Football Club, 4pm KO in the opening match of the 2013 HSBC Asian 5 Nations.

Dave will start from the bench but will hopefully get a chance to win his 1st cap for his adopted country after completing his 3 years of residency in March.

Dave will be joined in the squad by Kirk Munro and Ally Maclay of Valley, both of whom represented HK Scottish at Melrose 7s in 2011 when the club was officially launched.

They join HK XVs Strength and Conditioning coach Luke Davey, second row for HK Scottish and HK A cap, Adrian Griffiths, the HK Analyst and HK Scottish flanker, and Dave Garrick, the HK and HK Scottish physio, to ensure that HK Scottish is well represented in the squad.  HK Scottish winger Sean Cowley was also called up to the wider training squad and will be looking to represent HK A in their upcoming games.  Lachlan Chubb, who will join the club from HKFC in the summer was very unlucky to miss out on the game day 23 for this match but will remain in contention for future matches in the Asian 5 Nations.

Dave said, ’Its a great honour to be called up to the HK National team for the first time.  It is also great for HK Scottish to have representation in the team given the fact the club is less than two years old.  I was delighted when Craig Wilson became the first HK Scottish player to be capped in December as he had put in so much work to achieve that goal.  Craig is someone I look up to as I have seen the sacrifices he makes with his diet and fitness regime to ensure he is in peak physical condition when he plays.’

’Unfortunately Craig picked up an injury on the December tour which has kept him out of action since which allowed me the opportunity to play his position for Scottish and now hopefully on Saturday I will be able to come off the bench and emulate his achievements with HK.  Fingers crossed Craig can be back to full fitness soon and one day we can play in the same HK team.’

’It is great to have so many HK Scottish personnel on the support staff involved with the national team.  We have tried to create as professional a setup as possible and that is outlined by the fact we have the S&C coach, analyst and physio working with the national team.  We now have players like Stephen Dowse also qualifying this year and John Aikman in a years time so we hope to have more representation in the future. We also have Ramos Olasunkanmi. who has worked hard with backs coach Tim Usasz, looking to break into the Nigerian setup.’

Get yourselves down to Hong Kong Football Club on Saturday to support.  Please wear your HK Scottish tops!
