LOVE IS ALL AROUND AT THE ATHLETIC GROUND IN OPENING DAY VICTORY

James Love scores all the points, including an excellent try, as all London Scottish players and fans celebrate a winning start to the 2012/13 season.

The wing scored seven penalties in total, as well as the try, with the only kick missed being the conversion. With a haul of 26 points, Love was also named Man of the Match.

It couldn’t have been a much better start for the home side, with a penalty in the first minute for Love to settle any opening day nerves. However, the Rotherham pack soon made their presence felt and after some heavy pressure right on the Scottish line, it looked like a Rotherham score was inevitable, especially after prop Mark Irish was sent to the sin bin. However, Scottish’s defence held on and indeed, did not concede whilst temporarily down to 14 men.

Two penalties in quick succession, one for either side, was soon followed by a Rotherham try, Peter Homan breaking through and evading Love’s last-ditch tackle. With a James McKinney conversion this put Rotherham in the lead for the first time in the match; 6-10.

Despite some lengthy ’ping pong’ kicking, with even forward Mark Bright lending his boot to the mix, the opening half showed some bright signs as many of the new boys made their competitive debuts for Scottish.

Two more Love penalties, with one right on the stroke of half time, sent the home side in at the break leading 12-10.

The half time kicking contest, won by the London Scottish supporter, was a sign of things to come in the second half, as James Love added three consecutive penalties to extend the lead to 21-10.

A McKinney penalty in front of the posts pegged the scores back and the Titans threatened to get back into the game before flanker Cal Kirwan suffered the same fate as Irish and was sent to the bin.

Then came the try. With all of the back line involved, it was Jim Thompson with the decisive pass to Love on the wing, who skipped past the last defender to cap off a fantastic debut.

The Titans dominated possession in the closing stages and were rewarded with a Ted Stagg bulldozed effort in the corner to earn the away side a losing bonus point. Final Score 26-20.
